Turpentine Design, PLLC
Like our name, Turpentine, we think of architecture not as a single practice but as several interlocking ones. Turpentine is a fluid obtained from living trees, mainly pines, and is a source of material for organic syntheses. We believe architecture is an organic process that connects different elements of the environment. Landscapes are inseparable from structures, ecology is inseparable from building requirements, and improving human relationships is the ultimate goal of any project. Aesthetic movements come and go, but we have found these principles to be timeless.
As partners, we strive for honesty and clarity. Our first job is to understand the client’s vision and needs, not to present our own. We value timeliness, direct and open communication, as well as the occasional face-to-face meeting over a drink or a meal.
We have been fortunate to collaborate with some excellent clients on some wonderful projects, but we believe it is still too early to weigh in on the success of the work. A building exists in time, and its usefulness is directly related to how well it continues to perform.
Jessica Swanson, AIA, NCARB
Jessica is the owner and principal architect at Turpentine Design. In her role at Turpentine, Jessica is responsible for overseeing all projects from concept and design all the way through construction.
Growing up as a contractor’s daughter, Jessica provides construction-conscious designs that anticipate both long and short-term operations while not sacrificing design or the client’s needs. Her understanding of those needs and project goals have consistently led to creative and comprehensive design strategies. Examples of Jessica’s past projects span the United States and range from new building construction and interior renovations to automotive, fitness, healthcare, and government facilities.
Jessica graduated from East Carolina University, earning her bachelor’s degree in interior design. After spending some time working at various architecture firms she decided to return to school. She then graduated from NC State University’s College of Design, earning her master’s degree in architecture. She is a licensed architect. Prior to founding Turpentine Design, Jessica worked with a Raleigh area architectural firm where she managed projects from conception to final occupancy.
